How to avoid injuries from sports.

Whenever we set out to get fit our goals always superseded by our thoughts.  And sensible logic.  The mind is stronger than the body.  Our bodies will ultimately try to for fill our dreams and desires.

But if you haven’t participated in any sporting activity for a long period of time.   Then understanding how to avoid injuries from sports makes good sense.  Take those words on board, think about them before you start.   And you’ll be starting on good footing.

Motivation isn’t enough!

Taking the right precautions from the beginning is key to your health.  Which is what we’re aiming for, every sport is different and everyone participating in their chosen sport is unique!

My background is martial arts but fitness has been a large part of my life since my early teens.  So, my opinion will cover martial art techniques and general fitness.   Firstly, any form of kicking, if done incorrectly can and will cause lower back injuries.

Having supple joints and limbs can help prevent any issues.  But from my experience I have found that people with too much flexibility which is often natural.  Lack correct technique!

Making good choices.

If  this is the case back pain is imminent.  Every few months a new exercise fad comes out and with it will come a new batch of possible injuries.  This post is based solely on how to avoid injuries from sports, so I’m not going to probe to far into the correct or incorrect methods for kicking but I’ll gladly answer any questions that are asked.

Today’s sports are:<img src='data:image/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=%22' data-src="turmeric recovery tablets.jpg" alt="how to avoid injuries from sports"/>

  • Golf.
  • Tennis.
  • Running.
  • Grappling.

The list could go on and on but I’m sure you got the idea!

These are among the popular ones at this moment in time.  They all offer great fitness potential but they all also have the ability, to present a new set of injuries.

Most sporting activities are based on challenging your cardiovascular (Cardio).  This is the starting point.  Then the focus would move on to building up your core strength and ultimately body tone.

Injuries that can occur from these activities are:

  • Neck.
  • Shoulders.
  • Elbows.
  • Back.
  • Hips.
  • Knees.
  • Ankles.

  • Neck.  Sharp turns can result in stiffness of your neck or sternocleidomastoid muscle.
  • Shoulders and connecting tissue. Damage to shoulder ligaments and shoulder joint from over extending the joint or jolting.
  • Elbows.  Overextending can result in Tennis elbow symptoms.
  • Hips. Damage to muscles or ligaments from over extending or pounding of the hip joint.
  • Knees.  Over extending, twisting or constant snapping could cause discomfort to the surrounding joint and ligaments.

I have come across quite a few of the injuries but touch wood, never did it to myself!

Being mindful!

Take it slow, embrace the whole experience and to be honest with you injuries just never happen.  In life the things we prepare for seldom happen but the things we don’t prepare for often do!  Every class you take will or should have a warm up and a cool down program.

This is ultimately how to avoid injuries from sports.  There’s usually a stretching period in between but a lot of coaches have their own views on that.  Some will agree that it makes a difference and some believe it doesn’t.  Personally it’s something I’ve always done but that’s me and I’ve remained injury free!

If, you’ve ever been involved in sport and competed at a reasonably high level.  Then that tells me you have something special!  You have a certain drive, not found in a lot of individuals.

Most people refer to this drive as having a, “Fire in your belly“. This is a term used for someone with a drive.  Usually, associated with combat sports, but It’s still relative here.  Because of the feeling it gives!

Now, this is a good thing but again it can be bad!  You need to stay in charge of everything, stick to the rules.

You are ultimately the master of your own destiny.  And as such you should take all precautions to make sure what you do is done in a safe and sensible manner!

Taming the beast!

  1. Thanks for a really enjoyable post, I always try and stretch before exercise especially if it is a sport that requires sharp, explosive movements.

  2. As an avid tennis player I know what it means to be injured if you don’t be careful. Sports are good for health but you have to make sure to take all precautions to avoid injuries and enjoy what you like to do the most.

  3. My husband has a broken arm (he broke the same part twice) and he has stopped taking part in playing basketball. Now he is trying milder sports that no physical contacts will be involved. He says he would have taken more precautions if he could understand more about this area earlier.

May I ask, if he really wants to continue playing basketball, what kind of protection gadgets would he need?

    1. Hi Crystal. If he wants to continue and his chosen sport is Basketball, then all he can do is wear a trusted support, Vulcan is a good brand and take it easy. Basketball isn’t supposed to be a contact sport but it is!

  4. These are great tips. I wonder if diet doesn’t play a role in overuse injuries. If your joints are in really good health, then they may be a bit more protected. Just a point to ponder.
